Winter is here, and unfortunately, the hot cocoa and snow days are often accompanied by cold cars with frozen windows. No one wants to begin their day by chipping away the ice that’s formed on their windshields, so here are a few tips on how to outsmart Jack Frost.

How To Make Homemade De-Icer Spray

What You’ll Need:

  1. Spray Bottle
  2. Rubbing Alcohol 70%
  3. Dish Soap (Optional)

In your spray bottle combine 2-parts rubbing alcohol with 1-part water (if you have 50% rubbing alcohol, use less water) and a few drops of dish soap. Spray directly onto your windshield and watch the ice peel right off! No heavy-duty scraping is required.

Extra tip: If applied in the evening, a 2:1 or 3:1 mixture of vinegar and water will help prevent your windshield from frosting overnight.

Natural Defroster Hack

Don’t let frozen windshields interrupt your morning routine or your daily errands. If you’re tired of having to scrape frost from your car every time you go to the grocery store, check out this incredibly simple hack. Ready? Park your car facing the sun.

During winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun rises in the southeast, follows a low-angle arc over the southern horizon, and sets in the southwest. Tactfully using this knowledge can help you avoid frosty windshields altogether.

Park your car facing Southeast at night to save you valuable time in the morning, as the rising sun will naturally defrost your windshield for you and even warm up the interior before you get in. Similarly, if you’re out grocery shopping in the afternoon, try to nab a parking spot where your car faces south or southwest. The direct sunlight will prevent frost from forming on your windshield, and you’ll be cozy at home while everyone else is busy scraping.

Winter Car Trouble?

Windshields are an easy thing to take care of at home, but winter can cause many automotive problems that require a more professional touch. If your vehicle is in need of some help this holiday season, please get in touch – we’re always happy to help.
